Cloud-data platform to manage the Low Emission Zone of Barcelona
Challenge
AMB required a system to manage the statistical data extracted from the Low Emission Zone (ZBE) of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) with the aim of improving the city's air quality. This data is provided by systems such as:
- The cameras distributed in various municipalities of the metropolitan area that constantly read vehicle license plates.
- License plate data supplied by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT).
- AMB SCA, which alerts whenever an air pollution situation occurs.
Solution
Implement AMB-ZBE, a cloud-native web platform on AWS and serverless with the following features that integrates with the DGT data source to obtain the current census of license plates, the SCCA systems (Atmospheric Pollution Control System) for the detection of pollution episodes, and the cameras to collect license plate readings. This way, the data is stored and managed based on criteria and exemptions.
The platform allows for increased availability, scalability, and performance. The architecture is oriented towards business logic, separating the business and frontend layers. And it stands out for its ease of maintenance.
Outcome
With the implemented cloud-data architecture, AMB achieves:
- Manage and exploit the data of the license plates of 1.5 million vehicles expected daily in the ZBE.
- Improve the quality of the city's air.
- Reduction of CAPEX and OPEX.
- Automation of operations, agility in provisioning and resource allocation, with quick service delivery.
